They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences. CSIRO Manufacturing is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the 4D cell culture group led by CSIRO Science Leader Prof Sally McArthur. The group is part of the Cell Biology Theme within the Biomedical Manufacturing Program, and the project will be undertaken in collaboration with optical imaging and spectroscopy researchers at Swinburne University of Technology. This project will address the fundamental scientific and technical challenges associated with imaging 3D cell culture systems in real-time to enable the monitoring of cell viability, cell-cell signalling, scaffold/matrix organisation and the influence of biological and external stimuli (i.e. drugs) on engineered tissues. In order to address these fundamental questions the project will explore the application of existing and emerging imaging techniques in a multi-modal platform for monitoring 3D tissues and cell cultures. Current modalities targeted for inclusion are fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), non-linear optical microscopies like optical coherence spectroscopy (OCTOBER) and coherence anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). Additionally the project will explore multiphoton imaging and light sheet microscopy. Your duties will include: Implementing and integrating a range of optical imaging and detection techniques to undertake real time monitoring of 3D cell culture systems. Exploiting changes in the physical and chemical properties of native markers produced by cells or nanoparticle-based biosensors to deliver novel imaging modalities. Developing a data integration platform to enable the collection, comparison and optimisation of analysis techniques for 4D cell culture systems. Building and delivering project outcomes with research partners at Swinburne University of Technology and other organisations globally. Undertaking regular reviews of relevant literature and patents. Producing high-quality scientific or engineering papers for publication in quality journals, for client reports and patents. Location: CSIRO Manufacturing, Clayton, Victoria and Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn, Victoria Salary: $80k to $91k plus up to 15.4% superannuation Tenure: Specified term of up to three years Ref no: 57054 To be successful you will have: A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the qualifications of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as optics, biophysics or bioengineering . Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 yrs of relevant postdoctoral background. Background in the development and/or implementation of optical imaging and spectroscopy techniques e.g. FLIM, CARS, OCTOBER and multiphoton imaging in biology, chemistry or physics. The expertise to develop hardware and software to adapt existing instrumentation to meet project specific needs. Demonstrated expertise to develop and deliver effective solutions for data analysis and integration. High-level written and spoken communication expertise with the expertise to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences. The expertise to work efficiently as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
